Soup It Up: A Heartwarming Night of Art, Taste, and Generosity

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Soup It Up, an annual fundraising event that's nothing short of spectacular. This incredible nonprofit organization brings arts-integrated and social and emotional learning opportunities to over 10,000 children across Savannah each year.

Since its humble beginnings in 2008 as a kid's knitting and crochet class at a YMCA, Loop It Up has blossomed into a radiant tapestry of programs. They've partnered with schools, community centers, museums, and like-minded nonprofits to target Title 1 and transformation schools, as well as early learning centers that serve similar demographics.

Arts integration is an educational approach that's anything but ordinary. It weaves together visual arts, music, dance, theater, creative writing, and core academic subjects to create a vibrant and engaging learning experience. This holistic approach has been around for ages (think the ABC song), but it gained momentum in the mid-1960s and exploded in popularity in the 1990s when research-backed models emerged.

The Soup It Up event was held at the captivating Trustee's Garden Keyhoe Iron works Building. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by an artful display of student artwork and photographs of students immersed in the creative process. The main floor was an open canvas, pulsating with music from the DJ, setting an electrifying mood.

Local restaurants and caterers outdid themselves, offering a tantalizing array of soups, small plates, and sweet treats for the evening. Each spoonful was a journey of flavors, and I’m glad I held myself back from going back for more. The gazpacho with seafood from Collins Quarter stole my heart, and it was clear that I wasn't alone—they took home the first prize that night!

Amidst the delicious aromas and lively music, guests eagerly checked their bids at the silent auction and raffle table. The auctioneer kept the excitement level high, starting with donation bids that ranged from $10,000 to $50.

A presentation showcased the amazing projects students had worked on throughout the year. It was inspiring to see the passion and creativity of these young minds. As an educator in the arts, I appreciated every beautiful smile on that screen.

Organizations like Loop It Up are beacons of hope in an educational landscape that often prioritizes test scores over holistic development. I'm fortunate to work in a district and school that still values the arts, but I'm aware that this privilege may not last forever. The overemphasis on streamlining services and offerings concerns me; tests should not be the only marker of a schools’ success.
